Vulpes vulpes; the Red Fox (the Dog of the Forest)
The red fox has a widespread distribution in Britain and has become well adapted to urban life; one source states that urban populations can be five times more dense than populations of rural areas. So, a brief description will suffice. The red fox has reddish fur (shocker), with a white underbelly, snout & tip of the tail; the tip being a different colour is a characteristic of the Vulpes genus. As the only wild dog species in the UK, it is highly unlikely to be mistaken for anything else. It is a territorial mammal, living in family groups or clans much like the badger (Meles meles) which it often lives alongside in underground homes known as 'earths'.
