Organisation of the RMS Website
Pretty much all organisms that we collectively know about are arranged by a system known as taxonomy, a system which helps identification as well as conservation by creating recognisable 'units'. This system is broken down into 7 main stages. The first three are, starting from the top, kingdom, phylum and class.
For mammals these would be Animalia (Kingdom), Chordata (Phylum) and Mammalia (Class). Then there is further breaking down; orders, families, genera and species. The relevant orders are listed alphabetically on the navigation menu to the left with subsequent stages also arranged alphabetically. For example, the complete red fox taxonomy in a simple form would be Animalia Chordata Mammalia Carnivora Canidae Vulpes vulpes (Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus & Species).
Other intermediate & additional stages exist such as superfamilies, subfamilies, tribes and subspecies but these are not included on this site....mostly to prevent the heads of the students exploding.
Only the mammal species known to live on site are described here; others may be found and added later.
