Cervidae; The Deer Family
The species in this family range in size from 8kg to 800kg, though neither of these extremes inhabit the UK; 6 species of deer live with us, from the native red deer (Cervus elaphus) and roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) to the fallow (Dama dama), introduced to the country during the Norman era, and more recently the introductions of sika (Cervus nippon), Chinese water deer (Hydropotes inermis) and Reeve's muntjac (Muntiacus reevesi). There are few records of any of these species living wild in Cheshire, though roe deer appear to be increasing mildly, and it is this species that has been seen in the Reaseheath area this year.
