Lagomorpha; The Order Of Rabbits, Pikas & Hares
This order contains the pikas, rabbits & hare species, all of which are herbivores and all of which make use of refection (digesting the faeces twice). The fossils of lagomorphs are known to date as far back as 60 million years ago. There are 2 families, 11 genera and 58 species. Of these, only 3 species from the same family inhabit the UK and the rest of Europe and they are the brown hare (Lepus europaeus), the mountain hare (L. timidus) and the rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) all of the family Leporidae.
