Vespertilionidae; the Common Bat Family
This family of bats contains nearly all of the 18 species found in the UK, and whilst some are uncommon, rare, or even (sadly) non-viable in terms of population such as the greater mouse-eared bat (Myotis myotis) that only has one remaining known individual others are still fortunately common and all are protected by European and British legislation.
11 of the 16 common bats are known to exist in Cheshire as stated by Cheshire Mammal Group, and at present 6 of these have been heard on campus with the use of heterodyne bat detectors. These are the noctule (Nyctalus noctula), Leisler's bat (N. leisleri), common pipistrelle (Pipistrellus pipistrellus), soprano pipistrelle (P. pygmaeus), Daubenton's bat (Myotis daubentonii) & brown long-eared bat (Plecotus auritus).
