Talpidae; the Mole Family
There is, in Europe at least, three species in the Talpidae family and they are the blind mole (Talpa caeca), common mole (T. europaea) & roman mole (T. romana). The blind mole is found in southern Europe, from Spain through to Greece with the exception of southern Italy as this is the only place where the roman mole resides; neither the blind mole or the roman mole inhabit the UK. The common mole is found throughout Europe, overlapping the blind mole in some areas but not straying too far south; Spain is largely avoided as is Italy and Greece. It has not colonised Ireland but is present on most of the small islands around the UK.
