Carnivora; The Order Of Carnivores
This order contains the predators of the UK, though it must be said that not all mammalian meat-eaters will be found here nor is everything found here strictly carnivorous; in fact, the majority are actually omnivorous. It is only the cat family (Felidae) that cannot survive without meat and of the cats only the unlisted wildcat (Felis sylvestris) remains in the UK, albeit precariously. The lynx (Lynx lynx) used to live in the UK but was eradicated by gamekeepers and livestock farmers. Other species in the carnivore order (Carnivora) have also become extinct in the UK for the same reason as the lynx. These are the grey wolf (Canis lupis) of the dog family (Canidae) and the brown bear (Ursus arctos) of the bear family (Ursidae).
