Leporidae; the Hare Family
The species in this family are characterised by long back legs and long, mobile ears; they are built for speed as they have in addition flattened bodies. There are 3 species in this family in the UK; the two hares (Lepus spp.) are native whereas the rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) was brought from Europe by the Normans in the 12th century, although it did not become naturalised until the 19th century.
